Review: Like A Stuntman

Like A Stuntman – YOY (Bureau B Records)
Like a Stuntman’s previous release on Bureau B, 2009’s “Original Bedouin Culture” was hailed by critics as “Krautrock for the post Radiohead generation”. For “YOY” (their third album since forming in 2001) they continue to express their eccentric, melodic, electronic sound.

“YOY” makes for an inspiring listen with longingly processed and multi-layered, chaotic but harmonic, structures. With surreal, abstract and falsetto-delivered lyrics fused with digitally glamorous tunes, they position themselves firmly on the perimeters of the indie dance floor.

Their ecstatic songs are laced with the charms and chimes of the Orient (“Symptoms of the Ocular”), chopped samples (“Yesterday Euphoria”), woozy catatonia (“Sport”) and carnival marching bands and psychotic glitches (“Ooze Yeah Ooze”).

Like A Stuntman straddle the years between the heavenly beats of The Beloved to the more recent, complex psychedelic / experimental techno of Animal Collective and MGMT effortlessly.
